How Much Should You Water the Lawn In the Spring?

As temperatures start to warm and your lawn comes back to life, it’s natural to want to give it plenty of water. But in the spring, more isn’t always better. In fact, overwatering this time of year is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make.

The Golden Rule: About 1 Inch Per Week
Most lawns only need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Spring typically brings regular showers, so you may not need to water much at all early in the season. A simple rain gauge or even a small container placed in your yard can help you track how much water your lawn is actually getting.

Water Deep, Not Often
Instead of watering a little every day, aim for deep, infrequent watering. This encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, making your lawn more drought-resistant later in the summer. Shallow, frequent watering leads to weak roots and a lawn that struggles when temperatures rise.

Best Time to Water
If your lawn does need supplemental watering, the best time is early in the morning (between 5 AM and 9 AM). This allows the water to soak into the soil before the sun evaporates it and helps prevent fungal issues that can develop when grass stays wet overnight.

Watch the Weather
Spring weather can be unpredictable. If you’ve had a few days of steady rain, skip watering. On the other hand, if there’s a dry stretch with warmer temperatures and wind, your lawn may need a boost. Adjust based on conditions instead of sticking to a rigid schedule.

Know the Signs of Underwatering
Your lawn will tell you when it’s thirsty. Look for:Grass blades turning a dull, bluish-green color Footprints that remain visible after walking on the lawn. Soil that feels dry a couple inches below the surface

Avoid Common Spring Mistakes
Overwatering: Leads to shallow roots and can promote disease
Watering at night: Increases risk of fungus
Ignoring rainfall: Nature often does the job for you this time of year
Getting your watering routine right in the spring sets the foundation for a healthier, more resilient lawn all year long. When in doubt, water less often, but more deeply—and let the weather guide your schedule.
